In the wake of a devastating wave of violence in Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Alia has made an urgent appeal to the Federal Government for assistance. The latest attacks, believed to have been carried out by armed herders, claimed the lives of at least 56 people across Logo and Ukum local government areas.
Describing the incidents as “unprovoked invasions,” Governor Alia condemned the brutal killings and warned that any local collaborators aiding the attackers would be prosecuted. He revealed that 27 individuals were killed in Logo and 28 in Ukum, calling on residents to remain calm and refrain from retaliatory actions.
While visiting the affected communities, the governor praised the swift response of security agencies and expressed hope that the renewed national security strategy would help curb further violence. However, the tragic events have deepened political tension in the state, with accusations emerging from former Governor Samuel Ortom. Ortom claims that Alia has been downplaying the crisis and concealing the scale of the casualties, particularly in volatile regions like Ukum, Logo, Katsina-Ala, and Gwer East.
To tackle the rising insecurity, Alia is pushing for an increased military presence and has requested new Forward Operating Bases in several hotspots. The state had earlier introduced the Benue State Civil Protection Guards, a local initiative launched in December 2024, to help respond to kidnappings and attacks by armed groups.
The humanitarian situation remains dire, with thousands displaced and billions of naira worth of property destroyed. The crisis has disrupted farming, worsened food shortages, and driven many children out of school.
Governor Alia continues to emphasize the need for unity, cooperation with security agencies, and a strong federal response to restore peace across the state.
