Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured a place in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dramatic 2-1 victory over South Africa in a tense semi-final clash held in Casablanca on Tuesday.
The match was closely contested, with both sides creating chances. Nigeria went ahead just before halftime when Rasheedat Ajibade converted a penalty in the 45th minute after a foul in the box, giving the Falcons a narrow 1-0 lead at halftime.
South Africa responded in the second half. Linda Motlhalo equalised from the spot in the 60th minute, bringing the game level and increasing the pressure as both teams pushed for a winner.
With the game seemingly headed for extra time, Nigeria found the breakthrough in stoppage time. Michelle Alozie scored in the 94th minute after being set up by Esther Okoronkwo, securing a dramatic late winner for the Super Falcons. Nigeria now awaits the outcome of the second semi-final between hosts Morocco and Ghana’s Black Queens to determine their final opponent.
