The President described Chukwu as a national hero who brought pride and unity to the country through the beautiful game.In a statement released by the Presidency, Tinubu hailed Chukwu’s immense contributions to Nigerian football both as a player and a coach. “Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer; he was a symbol of excellence, resilience, and patriotism. His leadership on the pitch during Nigeria’s victorious 1980 Africa Cup of Nations campaign inspired a generation and uplifted a nation,” the President said. President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the Chukwu family, the Nigeria Football Federation, and the entire football community, urging them to take solace in the legend’s rich legacy. “Even in mourning, we celebrate a life well lived—a life that brought joy to millions, that united people beyond tribe and tongue. Nigeria has lost one of her finest sporting ambassadors,” Tinubu added. Christian Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman,” passed away on April 12, 2025, after a prolonged illness. He captained the Green Eagles to their first AFCON title in 1980 and later coached the Super Eagles and various clubs with distinction.
