President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
Adeniyi, whose initial tenure was scheduled to end on August 31, 2025, will now remain in office until August 2026.
The extension, according to the Presidency, is intended to enable him to consolidate ongoing reforms and see through key initiatives under the current administration.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. He said the move is aimed at sustaining momentum on major projects being implemented under Adeniyi’s leadership.
“These include the modernisation of the Customs Service, implementation of the National Single Window Project, and Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol,” the statement noted.
Onanuga further stated, “President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service. The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.”
Adeniyi was first appointed as the Comptroller-General of Customs in an acting capacity in June 2023, following the retirement of his predecessor, Hameed Ali. His position was confirmed in October 2023.
