Nigeria won its 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title after fighting back from two goals down to defeat host Morocco 3-2 in Saturday’s final.
The match took place at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, with the home crowd hoping to see Morocco lift the trophy for the first time.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons came from behind to secure a dramatic 3–2 victory over Morocco in what turned out to be one of the most memorable finals in the history of the competition.
Morocco dominated the opening 45 minutes. Their captain, Ghizlane Chebbak, put the hosts ahead in the 13th minute with a curling strike from outside the box. The pressure continued, and in the 24th minute, Sanaâ Mssoudy added a second goal to give Morocco a 2–0 lead.
But the Falcons came out strongly in the second half. In the 64th minute, a handball by Nouhaila Benzina inside the box was flagged after a VAR check. Okoronkwo stepped up and converted the penalty
Seven minutes later, Folashade Florence Ijamilusi levelled the scoreline with a well-taken goal in the 71st minute, shifting the momentum in favour of the Super Falcons.
In the 88th minute, substitute Joe Echegini scored the winner. After a free kick delivered by Okoronkwo, Echegini fired a low right-footed shot from the centre of the area past the Moroccan goalkeeper. The goal sealed the comeback and stunned the Moroccan supporters.
With this victory, the Super Falcons become the first African team to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) ten times. It is another milestone for the most successful women’s football team on the continent.
