Security operatives on Monday dispersed protesters led by activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, during a demonstration calling for the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, in Abuja.
The protest, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, represents a campaign demanding that the federal government obey court orders concerning Kanu’s continued detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The protesters, who had converged near the headquarters of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in Maitama, chanted “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” while insisting on Kanu’s immediate release. Among the demonstrators were Sowore, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, and other supporters of the IPOB leader.
Security agents, including personnel from the police and other defence forces, mounted barricades across the protest site to restrict movement and prevent further gatherings. Police officers fired tear-gas canisters and gunshots were heard, forcing protesters to scamper for safety.
