Former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, was on Thursday arrested by operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.
Sowore was reportedly taken into custody at the Federal High Court in Abuja shortly after he appeared in court to show solidarity with the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Sowore was on Thursday approached by security operatives who insisted he must accompany them to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.
When Sowore asked to know his offence, one the police officers stated they were acting on the directive of the Commissioner of Police.
“The commissioner of police said we should bring you to the office,” the officer added.
Despite questioning the lack of a formal invitation or written notice, Sowore reportedly agreed to go with the police after insisting that his lawyer must accompany him. He was later taken away in a police van.
Sowore’s arrest comes barely three days after he led a protest tagged #FreeNnamdiKanu in Abuja on October 20, 2025. The protest, which called for the immediate release of the IPOB leader, also spread to other parts of the country.
During the protest, Nnamdi Kanu’s counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, alongside twelve others, was remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre by a magistrate court in Abuja for participating in the rally.
