A female pilgrim from Plateau State, Hajiya Jamila Muhammad, has passed away in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, while participating in the ongoing 2025 Hajj pilgrimage. Her death, which occurred on Monday, June 2, was attributed to complications arising from diabetes, according to official statements released by the Plateau State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board.
The Executive Secretary of the board, Mr. Daiyabu Dauda, who also serves as the state’s Amirul Hajj, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement issued on Monday night. Speaking on the circumstances surrounding her death, Dauda said:
“When the complications began, we immediately took her to the hospital for proper medication in line with our mandate. Unfortunately, we lost her, and the doctor at the hospital confirmed it was complications due to diabetes.”
Dauda described the death as a painful loss, both for the family and the entire Plateau Hajj contingent. “With a heavy heart and total submission to the will of Allah, Plateau State has lost one of its female pilgrims, Hajiya Jamila Muhammad, on Monday, 2nd of June, 2025, at the King Abdul’aziz Hospital in Makkah as a result of diabetic complications, according to the doctors,” he said.
He further explained that the prompt medical response followed clear directives from Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, emphasizing that the welfare of pilgrims remains a top priority. Despite all efforts made by the medical team, the condition of the deceased deteriorated rapidly and she was declared dead shortly after admission.
Following Islamic traditions, Hajiya Jamila was buried the same day in Makkah. Her funeral prayer was held at the Grand Mosque, attended by her family members and officials from the Plateau State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board. The solemn rites were carried out in accordance with Islamic burial procedures, offering her a final rest in one of Islam’s holiest cities.
In his message of condolence, Dauda expressed his sympathy to the immediate family, the Muslim community in Plateau State, and the state government. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Plateau State, the family, friends, and relatives of the deceased. May Allah forgive her shortcomings and grant her Aljannatul Firdaws.”
Quoting the Qur’an, he added: “And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger and then death overtakes him, his reward has already become incumbent upon Allah (Quran 4:100).”
The Executive Secretary urged the deceased’s family to take solace in the belief that her passing occurred during a sacred spiritual journey, considered by many as an honourable exit in the Islamic faith. “We condole with her immediate family over this irreparable loss and pray that Allah gives them the strength to bear it,” he said.
The Plateau State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board reiterated its commitment to the welfare of its pilgrims, emphasizing that every effort is being made to ensure medical readiness and rapid response to emergencies throughout the pilgrimage.
