Security operatives have reportedly arrested Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother and his legal counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, during a protest in Abuja calling for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The protest, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, was organised by activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore, who confirmed the arrests via his X (formerly Twitter) account. Sowore alleged that police officers not only detained Ejimakor and Kanu’s brother but also assaulted several bystanders before taking them to the Federal Capital Territory Police Command.
“The @PoliceNG team deployed to brutalize #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protesters arrested Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, and his lawyer, @AloyEjimakor, as well as innocent bystanders. They were beaten and taken to the FCT command. The police must release them immediately!” Sowore stated.
NigeriaNews had reported that security operatives dispersed the protesters using teargas canisters and live bullets. The campaign demanded that the federal government obey court orders concerning Kanu’s continued detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Kanu, the IPOB leader, has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021 following his re-arrest and extradition from Kenya.
