Lagos Hotelier, Slumps and Dies During Wife’s 60th Birthday Thanksgiving

Date:

What was meant to be a joyful celebration turned into a devastating tragedy on Saturday, as prominent Lagos hotelier and retired Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Otunba Kunle Akinyele, collapsed and died during his wife’s 60th birthday thanksgiving service.

The incident took place at Christ Apostolic Church, Oke Iyanu, Odemuyiwa District Headquarters in Egbeda, Lagos. The thanksgiving service was being held in honor of his wife, Deaconess Catherine Adejoke Akinyele.

Eyewitnesses report that Akinyele appeared distressed during the service, gesturing for assistance—possibly asking for water or an inhaler—before suddenly slumping to the floor. Despite immediate efforts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Plans had been made for a grand reception following the service at Noble Castle Events Centre in Igando. Guests and vendors had arrived early in preparation for the festivities, with elaborate decorations, food, cocktails, and a live band all set up. One vendor shared, “We got there by 10 a.m. for the event scheduled at 2 p.m., only for it to be cancelled due to the heartbreaking news.”

Otunba Akinyele was well known in the hospitality sector as the chairman of Westgate Hotel located in Isheri, Idimu. His unexpected passing has sparked an emotional response across social media, with many expressing condolences and emphasizing the need for better health awareness, especially among men.

The family is yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
