The Lagos State Government has denied any involvement in the demolition of a property allegedly belonging to the brother of Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, the government described Obi’s claims as “unverified and misleading,” and asserted that none of its agencies was involved in the demolition.
“The Lagos State Government is compelled to address the recent allegations made by Mr. Peter Obi regarding the demolition of a property belonging to his brother,” the statement read.
“We wish to categorically state that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) or any other agency of the Lagos State Government did not carry out the said demolition,” Omotoso said.
He further clarified that Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, the Special Adviser on eGIS & Urban Development, who oversees LASBCA, also confirmed that the agency had no involvement in the alleged exercise.
Expressing concern that Obi’s remarks might be politically motivated, the statement warned against attempts to incite public sentiment ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
“We find it disturbing that Mr. Peter Obi would make such allegations without verifying the facts, especially given the proximity of the local government elections,” the government stated.
The commissioner reiterated the government’s stance on due process and rule of law, stressing that any proven unlawful actions—by individuals or groups—would be dealt with in accordance with legal provisions.
Omotoso also urged the public to ignore the accusations and continue to trust the government’s commitment to order, justice, and public welfare.
To provide further clarity, the state announced that it has directed the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahun Owodunni Oki (FNIA), to launch a full investigation through LASBCA.
“The investigation will help clarify the circumstances surrounding the demolition and ensure that any necessary actions are taken,” Omotoso said.
The government concluded by assuring all Lagos residents—regardless of political alignment—of their right to live, own property, and work without fear or discrimination.
