The Katsina State Government has declared Monday, July 14, 2025, a work-free day in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday after a prolonged illness.
The announcement was made in an official statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Abdullahi Garba Faskari. He stated that the decision was approved by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda as a mark of respect for the late president, who hailed from Daura in Katsina State.
“The Governor of Katsina State, His Excellency, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON, has declared Monday, 14th July 2025, as a work-free day in the State. This follows the demise of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died earlier this evening of today (13th July 2025) in London,” the statement read.
According to Faskari, the holiday is “intended to enable workers and residents of the State to join the rest of the country in mourning the loss and offering prayers for the late leader.”
Governor Radda extended his condolences to the late president’s family, the people of Katsina, and Nigerians across the country. He described Buhari as “a great leader, a hero, a true democrat and a patriotic elder statesman whose life was dedicated to the service of Nigeria.”
The governor also offered prayers for Buhari, asking Allah to grant him mercy and admit him into Aljannatul Firdaus.
Further details on burial arrangements, the statement noted, would be announced in due course.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a two-term civilian president from 2015 to 2023, died in London at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2025. His death has drawn condolences from across Nigeria and beyond.
