Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political shift in the region.
Mbah made the announcement during a state-wide broadcast on Tuesday, where he explained that the move was driven by a strategic desire to align Enugu and the wider South-East with the central government.
“Today, after a long reflection, we have made the decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the All Progressives Congress,” the governor said during the broadcast.
He emphasized that the choice was not made lightly but was necessary for the future of the state.
“Today, I stand before you to announce a break from the past and to share a decision that will shape the road ahead. This concerns our values, how we organize ourselves politically and how we secure the future of our project and our people.
Leadership sometimes demands painful decisions in the service of higher principles and goals. And there comes a time when everyone must make a bold choice to determine their destiny.”
The governor acknowledged the support he received from the PDP throughout his political journey and expressed gratitude for the platform it provided.
“To the Peoples Democratic Party which provided us the platform on which we campaigned and won, I extend deep gratitude. The PDP supported us through a demanding campaign and joined us in celebrating the victory,” he said.
Governor Mbah praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that Enugu State has witnessed “massive support and developmental attention” under his administration.
Peter Mbah, elected on the platform of the PDP in 2023, is currently serving his first term as governor.
He follows in the footsteps of other PDP governors who have moved to the APC, including Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State and Umoh Eno of Akwa Ibom.
