The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, setting a new date of October 16, 2025.
The adjournment followed the Nigerian Medical Association’s (NMA) failure to present its independent medical report on Kanu’s health before the court.
Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the proceedings, explained that the court could not continue without the medical report, which is expected to guide decisions on whether Kanu should remain in Department of State Services (DSS) custody or be moved to the National Hospital for proper medical treatment.
The judge had earlier instructed the NMA to assemble a team of medical specialists from various regions and fields across Nigeria to assess Kanu’s health independently. The association reportedly concluded its assessment and sent the findings to the office of the Attorney General of the Federation, in line with the court’s directive.
However, during Wednesday’s hearing, counsel for the DSS, Mr. Suraj S’aad (SAN), informed the court that the report was not yet ready for formal presentation. He requested a short adjournment to enable the medical board to finalise its documentation.
Justice Omotosho therefore granted the DSS counsel’s request and adjourned the matter to October 16, when the court is expected to receive the NMA report and decide the next phase of the trial.
