The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a sweeping victory in Saturday’s by-elections, winning 12 out of the 16 federal and state constituencies contested across 12 states, according to results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) clinched two seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) secured one seat each.
The elections were conducted to fill vacancies created by the death or resignation of lawmakers after the 2023 general elections.
The process drew criticism following reports of vote buying, violence, and irregularities.
The results as declared by INEC are as follows:
Kano State
In Kano, the APC candidate Garba Gwarmai of the Ghari/Tsanyawa constituency won with 31,472 votes against NNPP’s Yusuf Maigado, who scored 27,931.
However, NNPP’s Ali Alhassan emerged victorious in the Bagwai/Shanono State Assembly by-election with 16,198 votes, defeating the APC candidate, who polled 5,347.
Kaduna State
APC’s Fidelix Bagudu won the Chikun/Kajuru federal constituency with 34,580 votes, defeating PDP’s 11,491 and ADC’s 3,477.
In Basawa, APC’s Dahiru Umar-Sani was declared winner with 10,996 votes, while PDP’s Muazu Danyaro scored 5,499. SDP’s DanBala Usman polled 811, and ADC’s Mahmuda Almustapha secured 146.
In Zaria Kewaye, Isa Mohammed of the APC secured 26,613 votes to defeat Nuhu Muazu of the SDP with 5,721 votes and Mahmud Wappa of the PDP with 5,331 votes.
Oyo State
The PDP recorded its only victory in Oyo State, where Fola Oyekunle won the Ibadan North Federal Constituency seat. The Returning Officer, Abiodun Oluwadare, announced that Mr Oyekunle had 18,404 votes to defeat APC’s Adewale Olatunji, who secured 8,312.
ADC’s Femi Akin-Alamu polled 88, APGA’s Olabisi Olajumoke 40, and ZLP’s Hammed Badmus 18.
Ogun State
INEC declared APC’s Adesola Elegbeji winner of the Remo Federal Constituency by-election, with 41,237 votes against PDP’s Bolarinwa Oluwole, who polled 14,324.
Anambra State
APGA secured two seats in Anambra. Emmanuel Nwachukwu won the Anambra South Senatorial District with 90,408 votes, defeating Azuka Okwuosa of the APC, who had 19,847 votes, and Donald Amangbo of the ADC, who finished with 2,889 votes.
In Onitsha North Constituency 1, Ifeoma Azikiwe of APGA was declared winner. INEC Returning Officer Ibiam Ekpe disclosed that Azikiwe secured 7,774 votes to defeat her closest rival, Justina Azuka of the ADC, who received 1,909 votes. Ezennia Ojekwe of the APC had 1,371 votes, while Njideka Ndiwe of the YPP finished with 655 votes.
Kogi State
In Kogi’s Okura constituency, APC’s Hassan Shado won with a landslide of 55,073 votes, defeating PDP’s candidate with 1,038 votes. APM came third with 445 votes.
Jigawa State
APC’s Rabiu Mukhtar emerged winner in the Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, securing 38,449 votes to defeat Isah Auwalu of the PDP, who had 13,519. Sabo Salisu of the NNPP received 2,931 votes, while Muktar Babangida of the ZLP finished with 31 votes.
Edo State
In Edo, APC’s Omosede Igbinedion won the Ovia federal constituency with 77,053 votes, ahead of PDP, which secured 3,838 and the ADC, which had 925.
For the Edo Central Senatorial District, APC’s Joseph Ikpea triumphed with 105,129 votes, defeating PDP’s Joe Okojie, who polled 15,146.
Niger State
APC’s Dogari Daje won the Munya constituency by-election with 12,556 votes, defeating PDP’s Sabon Sunday, who scored 5,646.
Adamawa State
In a tight race, APC’s Misa Musa secured 15,923 votes to edge out PDP’s Buba Muhammad, who polled 15,794. The ADC won 42 votes, APGA 14, AAC 17, and AA 2.
Taraba State
In Karim 1 constituency of Taraba State, APC’s Abner Shittu was declared winner by INEC.
Abner Shittu scored 5,901 votes to defeat PDP’s Ali Kanda who secured 5,527 votes. ADC’s Badina Garba finished third with 2,069 votes.
Zamfara State (Inconclusive)
INEC declared the Zamfara by-election inconclusive after cancellations in Sakajiki and Kambarawa wards.
The Returning Officer, Lawal Sa’adu of the Federal University Gusau, explained that the total number of registered voters in the affected polling units was 5,446, while 3,265 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) were collected in those areas.
Mr Sa’adu said the All Progressives Congress (APC) scored 7,001 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scored 5,339 votes, leaving a margin of 1,662 votes.
He added that since the margin was less than the number of collected PVCs (3,265) in the cancelled units, the election cannot be concluded.
Enugu State
The Enugu South Urban Constituency election was stalled once again amid tensions, marking the fourth failed attempt to conclude the exercise, according to The Guardian.
