Passengers traveling on the Abuja-Kaduna train route were left stranded on Tuesday morning after the train derailed along the corridor.
The incident occurred at Asham, shortly after the train departed Abuja around 11 a.m. Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of panic as passengers rushed out in confusion, scrambling for safety.
Confirming the incident, the Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, said a rescue operation was already underway at the scene. He stated, “I don’t want to say much for now, but the incident is confirmed and the rescue operation is on as we speak.”
The cause of the derailment has not yet been established. However, military personnel were said to have been deployed to the location to assist with evacuating passengers and restoring order.
