PDP Zones 2027 Presidential Ticket to the South

Date:

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that its presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections will be zoned to the South.

The decision was made at the 102nd meeting of the NEC held on Monday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, disclosed this while reading the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting.

The communiqué stated, “NEC received and after extensive deliberation approved the report of the National Convention Zoning Committee which recommended that all PDP National Office positions currently in the Northern Region of the country remain in the Northern Region.

“That all PDP National Office positions currently in the Southern Region of the country remain in the Southern Region.

“That having retained the position of the National Chairman in the Northern Region of the country, the Presidential Candidate of the Party for the 2027 General Election is hereby zoned to the Southern Region.

“That the Regions should immediately micro-zone positions within its Region for implementation.

“NEC also received an update from the PDP Constitution Amendment Committee and directed the Committee to circulate the Draft Constitution Amendment to various Organs and Chapters of the Party for further inputs.”

By zoning the presidency to the South, the PDP maintained its existing zoning arrangement that leaves the North with the position of national chairman. The NEC further confirmed Amb. Iliya Umar Damagum, who has been serving in an acting capacity, as substantive national chairman until December 2025.

The communiqué added, “In recognition of his efforts in stabilising the party, Amb. Iliya Umar Damagum was confirmed as substantive national chairman of the PDP, effective immediately. His tenure will last until the National Convention in November 2025.

“In recognition of the efforts of the National Working Committee, NWC, under the leadership of the Acting National Chairman, Amb. Iliya Umar Damagum, in stabilising the party, NEC hereby ratifies and confirms his appointment as substantive national chairman of the Party.”
