Amid escalating violence across several parts of Nigeria, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate deployment of a special squad to counter the growing wave of insecurity. The directive comes in response to recent deadly attacks in Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto states, which claimed at least 21 lives.
Speaking at a high-level meeting with Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron Commanders in Abuja on Tuesday, Egbetokun outlined a series of measures aimed at strengthening the tactical capacity of the force. He instructed all PMF squadrons nationwide to maintain at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit on constant standby to respond swiftly to emergencies.
“The PMF was created as a strike force – swift, decisive, and combat-ready,” the IGP emphasized. “Effective immediately, every squadron must have a standby unit capable of rapid deployment to support state commands in crisis situations.”
The police chief also announced a quarterly training programme for PMF units, with a focus not only on operational readiness but also on ethics, professionalism, and responsible policing. He revealed plans to review and streamline squadron sizes to enhance agility and performance, while holding commanders accountable for their units’ conduct.
Reiterating an earlier directive, Egbetokun stressed the withdrawal of PMF personnel from non-core assignments, particularly VIP escort duties. He warned that such roles have diluted the force’s effectiveness and will be phased out gradually.
“We must restore the Police Mobile Force to its rightful role as a dominant force in internal security,” Egbetokun declared. “This includes strengthening leadership, improving strategic planning, and ensuring continuous capacity building.”
He concluded with a strong message on discipline and accountability, making it clear that misconduct within the ranks will no longer be tolerated.
