The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State, James Melvin Ejeh, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Fulani herdsmen to vacate all farmlands across the council area.
The directive was given on Saturday, April 26, 2025, during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the council secretariat in Obagaji. The meeting was attended by traditional rulers, Fulani community leaders, youth representatives, and security agencies, convened to address growing tensions over herders’ activities as the farming season approaches.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Obochi Solomon, Ejeh emphasized the critical role of agriculture as the backbone of Agatu’s economy. He stressed that farmers must be allowed to access and cultivate their lands without fear or interference.
“Our farmers must cultivate without disruption. We will do everything necessary to create a safe environment for them,” Ejeh declared.
Although the council initially set a 48-hour deadline, the Fulani leader, Ardo Mohammed Riksu, requested a one-week grace period to organize a peaceful withdrawal. The request was granted by the council to encourage a non-confrontational process.
The General Youth Chairman of Agatu LGA, Oloche Silas, also pledged on behalf of the local youth to support the peaceful evacuation and avoid any acts of violence.
Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), praised the peaceful approach taken by all parties and committed to providing necessary support to ensure a smooth relocation.
Chief John Agidani, representing the Och’Agatu at the meeting, commended the council leadership for its proactive measures and called on all stakeholders to honor the agreements reached.
The move by Agatu authorities highlights the community’s determination to protect its agricultural interests and maintain peace as the new planting season gets underway.
